Research Finds Sleep Loss in Children Can Lead to Obesity

According to PressTV, Massachusetts General Hospital for Children (MGHfC) has recently found research that suggests chronic sleep loss in infants and young children can later lead to obesity.

Researchers investigated over 1,046 children’s sleeping habits at the ages of 6 months, 3 years and 7 years old, and also measured their height, weight, lean body mass and abdominal fat.

They found that those with the lowest sleep scored had the highest levels of all body measurements, particularly abdominal fat – linking lack of sleep to obesity.

The researchers suggested that this can be avoided by:

  • setting a consistent bedtime
  • limiting caffeine and high-sugar substances before bed
  • cutting out high-tech distractions in the bedroom
